Data analysts are among the most in-demand people in Nigerian offices right now. Banks, telecoms, hospitals, retailers and fintechs all collect far more numbers than they can read, and they need someone who can turn those numbers into a clear answer. If you want to become a data analyst in Nigeria, the good news is that you do not need a specific degree to start. What you need is a set of practical skills, a few projects you can show, and the patience to practise every week.
What a data analyst actually does
A data analyst collects, cleans and studies data, then presents what they found in charts, tables and short written reports. The US Department of Labor’s O*NET describes the role as applying quantitative methods to structured and unstructured data, cleaning it, summarising it with descriptive statistics, and producing visualisations that help decision-makers act. In a Nigerian business, that might mean checking why loan repayments dropped in one state, or showing a retail manager which products sell best on weekends.
Skills you need
Four skill groups cover most entry-level data analyst job descriptions.
Excel or Google Sheets comes first. You should be comfortable with lookups, pivot tables, filters and basic formulas. Many Nigerian employers still run their reporting in spreadsheets, so this skill is useful on day one.
SQL is next. SQL is the language used to pull data out of databases. Learn to select, filter, group, sort and join tables. Kaggle’s free Intro to SQL course is a good place to start, and it uses Google BigQuery, so you practise on real query tools.
A visual tool comes third. Power BI or Tableau turns your analysis into dashboards that people can use. Microsoft states that Power BI Desktop is free to download and use for building reports on your own computer, which makes it the easiest tool to start with for a Nigerian learner on a tight budget.
Python or R is the fourth. Python is the more common choice for job postings. Pandas, the Python library for working with tables, is the tool most analysts use after they outgrow spreadsheets. You do not need Python on day one, but it is worth adding within your first few months of study.
Basic statistics ties these together. You should understand averages versus medians, what a percentage change really means, and why a correlation is not proof of cause. A confident analyst is the one who knows when a number is misleading.
Roadmap for Nigerians with no degree
Nothing in the typical job description says you must hold a university degree to work as a data analyst, and many employers hire on demonstrated skill. The roadmap below assumes you are starting from scratch and studying part-time alongside work or school.
- Spend the first month on spreadsheets. Learn to clean data, remove duplicates, and build pivot tables from a real dataset.
- Spend the next two months on SQL. Practise querying a sample database until you can answer a business question with a single clear query.
- Add Power BI or Tableau in month four. Build one dashboard from a public dataset and publish a screenshot of it.
- From month four onward, start Python with pandas. Aim to clean and summarise a dataset in a notebook without help.
- Build two or three portfolio projects, then start applying. Do not wait until you feel fully ready, because employers hire on evidence, and every project you finish is evidence.
How long this takes depends on your hours per week. Google states on its certificate page that the programme can be finished in roughly three to six months with flexible study, which is a useful guide for a part-time plan. We could not verify a single timeline for Nigerian learners specifically, so treat that figure as Google’s estimate, not a promise.
Learning resources
The Google Data Analytics Certificate on Coursera is a well-known beginner route. Google’s own page lists SQL, Python (with R as an option in a variant), data visualisation, data storytelling and the use of AI tools for analysis as core content. It is paid through Coursera, and Check the price on Coursera before you enrol. Our guide on free online courses with certificates for Nigerians explains which parts of these programmes are genuinely free and which are not.
For fully free study, Kaggle Learn offers free courses on Python, pandas, data visualisation and SQL, and Kaggle states that the courses cost nothing and that you can earn a certificate. freeCodeCamp offers a free Data Analysis with Python certification made of five required projects, built in the browser, and freeCodeCamp says the certification is free and self-paced.
If you want structured free training with a national programme behind it, read our page on the 3MTT Program Registration 2026. It is a government-backed tech training scheme that may suit you if you are eligible.
How to build a portfolio that employers will read
A portfolio is a set of finished projects with clear write-ups. Three projects are enough to start. Pick data you care about, because you will be more motivated to finish it.
For each project, write a short problem statement, describe the dataset and where you got it, show the cleaning steps, present two or three findings with charts, and end with one recommendation. A recruiter should understand the project in under two minutes.
Finding work in Nigeria
Local data analyst roles are advertised on LinkedIn, company career pages and Nigerian job boards. Search for junior analyst, reporting analyst and MIS officer as well as “data analyst”.
Finding remote work
Remote work is open to Nigerians on several platforms, but each has its own standards. Upwork and Freelancer are the easiest places to start. On Upwork, freelancers in Lagos list skills such as Excel, SQL and Power BI on public profiles, and clients review the work. On Freelancer, many postings are for one-off data cleaning or analysis projects, often with a fixed budget. Expect small early jobs and build reviews from there.
Toptal is harder to enter. Its published data analytics engineer listing asks for a bachelor’s degree, four years of experience, expert SQL and working knowledge of Python, along with cloud warehouse experience. Toptal’s data analyst template is for companies hiring analysts, not a candidate listing. If you are early in your career, treat Toptal as a future goal rather than a first application.

What we could not verify
We could not verify a reliable salary range for data analysts in Nigeria from a reputable published source for this update. Any number you see online, including figures in advertisements, should be checked against the job posting itself. Remote rates depend heavily on platform, client and experience, and no single figure applies. If you want a salary figure, ask employers directly during interviews, and check current job postings on LinkedIn.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a degree to become a data analyst in Nigeria?
No specific degree is required by most job postings we reviewed, and many employers hire on skills and portfolio. Some larger employers and global remote platforms do ask for degrees, so check each posting.
How long does it take to become job-ready?
Google estimates three to six months of flexible study for its certificate. Your own timeline depends on how many hours you study each week and how many projects you finish.
Are the tools free?
Google Sheets is free. Power BI Desktop is free to download and use, according to Microsoft. Kaggle Learn and freeCodeCamp courses are free. The Coursera certificate is paid.
Watch out for scams
Be careful with any “academy” that promises a guaranteed data analyst job after you pay a large upfront fee. No legitimate training provider can guarantee employment. If someone offers you a job and asks for a payment to “process” your application or buy your equipment, stop. Check the company on LinkedIn and its official website before you send money.
