You do not need to start by buying an expensive bootcamp. The safer approach is to learn one practical AI skill, practise it on a real task, review the output carefully, and build a small portfolio of work you can explain. This guide lists official learning routes and explains what their credentials do—and do not—mean.
Free and no-charge AI learning routes

Start with a practical seven-step plan
- Pick one goal: improve your writing workflow, understand AI basics, create a simple spreadsheet-analysis routine, or learn how to evaluate AI output.
- Begin with a foundation course before chasing a certificate or advanced agent-building lesson.
- Spend short, regular sessions learning and practising rather than collecting many unfinished courses.
- Create a small, truthful work sample: for example, a documented research summary, a cleaned-up CV draft, a content outline with sources, or a simple prompt-and-review workflow.
- Check all AI output for accuracy, missing context, bias, and invented citations before using or sharing it.
- Keep personal data, employer information, client records, passwords, bank details, and confidential documents out of unfamiliar AI tools unless you have clear permission and understand the platform’s controls.
- Describe your actual skill level honestly when applying for work. Completing a course helps learning; it does not guarantee an interview, job, client, or income.
Certificates, badges, and certifications are different
Read the provider’s wording carefully. A course-completion certificate usually confirms that you completed a course. A badge may reflect completion of a specific platform activity. A professional certification may involve a separate assessment or exam. OpenAI explicitly says its eligible Academy completion certificates are not OpenAI Certifications. Google also distinguishes certificates from certifications. Never pay a third party who claims it can convert a course certificate into a formal credential.
How to avoid fake AI-course offers
- Register only through the provider’s official domain, not a WhatsApp contact, Telegram channel, copied form, or social-media inbox.
- Do not pay anyone to unlock a “free” course, issue a guaranteed certificate, change your result, or promise a remote AI job.
- Do not share passwords, OTPs, card details, bank logins, BVN, or an employer’s confidential data with a course agent.
- Confirm whether a course is marked no-charge/free, subscription-based, or exam-based on the current official page; terms can change.
- Be cautious with screenshots claiming that a certificate guarantees foreign income or employment. Hiring decisions remain with employers and clients.
