The Critical Skills Employment Permit is one of the strongest work routes into Ireland for skilled Nigerians, but only if your job, your qualification and your salary all meet the official rules. This guide explains who is eligible, what salary thresholds apply in 2026, how the application works and where to check the current position on the official Irish government site.

What the Critical Skills Employment Permit is

The Critical Skills Employment Permit is issued by the Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment for jobs in occupations that Ireland has classed as strategically important, such as ICT professionals, professional engineers and technologists. The permit allows you to work in the State for the named employer, in the occupation and location written on the permit. It is generally a more generous route than the General Employment Permit, and it carries benefits such as a clearer route to longer-term residence for holders who meet the conditions.

The job offer must last at least two years

Critical Skills Employment Permits are only issued for a job offer of at least two years. If the offer is shorter, the department directs you to look at the General Employment Permit instead. Ask your prospective employer to confirm the contract length in writing before you apply.

Who can apply

The employer must be a bona fide employer based and trading in Ireland and registered with Revenue. Where the company is registered, it also needs to appear on the Companies Registration Office or the Register of Friendly Societies, if applicable. The department also applies a company test: an employment permit is not granted to a company unless 50% or more of its employees are EEA nationals at the time of application, although there are limited waivers, including for certain start-ups supported by Enterprise Ireland or IDA Ireland.

You must also have the qualifications, skills and experience the job requires. Eligibility depends on two things: whether your occupation is on the Critical Skills Occupations List, and whether your offered pay meets the minimum annual remuneration for your route.

2026 minimum salary thresholds

According to the Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment’s minimum annual remuneration page, the 2026 thresholds for the Critical Skills Employment Permit are:

  • Critical Skills Employment Permit with a relevant degree: €40,909 a year.
  • Critical Skills Employment Permit without a relevant degree: €68,911 a year, with the applicant needing the necessary level of experience.
  • Critical Skills Graduate, where the applicant received their qualification within the 12 months before applying: €36,849 a year.

Thresholds can change, so confirm the current figures on the official page at the minimum annual remuneration page on enterprise.gov.ie before you rely on them. Where a figure cannot be confirmed on that page, check the official site.

Only certain parts of your pay count toward the threshold: your basic salary, which must be at least the national minimum wage, and qualifying health insurance payments made to a registered health insurer. Bonuses and other extras are not counted, so ask your employer to show how the package is built.

Step-by-step: how to apply

  1. Confirm that your occupation is on the Critical Skills Occupations List and that the employer is registered and eligible.
  2. Get a written job offer for at least two years, stating the full job description, start date, annual salary excluding bonuses, and the qualifications or experience required.
  3. Check that your salary meets the 2026 threshold for your route, including the health insurance element if it is part of the package.
  4. Read the department’s Critical Skills Employment Permit checklist and user guide before you start.
  5. Apply online on the Employment Permits Online System (EPOS) through the official government site. The processing fee for a Critical Skills Employment Permit is €1,000, according to the department.
  6. Submit the application at least 12 weeks before the planned employment start date. Applications are processed in date order by employer type.
  7. Respond within 28 days if the processor asks for more information.

What happens after you apply

An application goes through three stages: it is received and queued, it is considered by a decision maker, and if you are refused you can ask for a review within 28 days using the prescribed form. A review is considered by a more senior official. If the refusal is confirmed on review, you can still make a fresh application that follows the correct procedure for your permit type. If your application is unsuccessful, 90% of the processing fee is refunded to the applicant under current department policy.

Tips that save time

Keep your qualification documents, certified copies of your passport, your CV and the employer’s written offer ready before you start. Check that the employer’s name and address on the offer match Revenue and company registration records. Ask the employer to confirm the salary breakdown, because a salary that looks high can still fail if the qualifying elements are too low.

Renewal and staying on the permit

A Critical Skills Employment Permit is issued for a set period and can be renewed while you remain in the same eligible role. The minimum salary test also applies at renewal, so if your pay falls below the threshold for your route, the renewal may fail even if the job continues. Check the official site for the current renewal period, the renewal application form and the fee before you plan around it. Keep your payslips and employer confirmation letters for each year, because they help if the department asks for proof later.

If you change employers, the new job must also meet the requirements, and the new employer generally needs its own application. Do not start a new job on the strength of an old permit without checking the official site first. A change of employer or role can affect your permit, so get written confirmation before you move.

Family members

Whether a spouse or dependants can join you on a Critical Skills Employment Permit, and what permission they would need, is a detail that changes over time and depends on your circumstances. Do not rely on a summary from a third party. Check the official government site for the current family permission rules, and ask the department directly through the official contact route if your case is unusual.

Where to apply and check progress

Apply only through the official Employment Permits Online System (EPOS) on the government website. Be careful with any site that asks you to pay a middleman or claims to process your application for a fee. The official route is free apart from the government processing fee. Use the department’s published processing dates to see where your application sits in the queue. If you cannot find the page or the official link, search for the department of enterprise, tourism and employment and check the official government domain before you enter any details.

Common mistakes that cause delays

  • Applying with a job offer shorter than two years, which points to the General Employment Permit instead.
  • Using a salary figure that includes bonuses, which do not count toward the threshold.
  • Missing the 12 week deadline before the planned start date.
  • Submitting documents that do not match the employer’s registration details.
  • Not responding within 28 days when the processor asks for more information.

Before you apply: a short checklist

  • Confirm your occupation is on the Critical Skills Occupations List.
  • Confirm the employer is registered with Revenue and, where applicable, the Companies Registration Office.
  • Get the written two year job offer with the full salary breakdown.
  • Check the 2026 threshold for your route on the official page.
  • Prepare your qualification documents and passport copies.
  • Start the application at least 12 weeks before your start date.

Scam warning

Do not pay anyone who promises a guaranteed Irish work permit, a fast-track slot or a job offer in exchange for a fee. The official fee is paid through the government’s own system, and the department does not sell places. Be wary of job offers that come without an employer you can verify on the Companies Registration Office or Revenue records, and never send your passport to a stranger.
