Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) has announced tuition fee exemptions, Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarships and special financial grants for newly admitted students in selected faculties and programmes for the 2026/2027 academic session. The announcement is an official notice dated 19 October 2026, signed by the University Registrar, Mfon S. Ukpabio, MNIM. This guide explains what the notice covers, who it covers, what it does not cover, and how to confirm your own eligibility before you pay anything.

The most important thing to understand is that the three schemes are not the same. Some cover tuition only. Some cover tuition and sundry charges. Some are grants for international students whose amounts were not published. Read the category that matches your course before you plan your money.

What the AKSU notice says

According to reports of the notice, the university announced three categories of support. The first is a tuition fee exemption for newly admitted students in the Faculty of Agriculture. The second is a tuition fee exemption together with Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarships for newly admitted students in five named programmes. The third is a special financial grant for international students. The notice is intended to reduce the financial burden on eligible students and support access to university education.

Because this is a notice for a specific session, the wording matters. The exemptions and scholarships apply to students newly admitted for 2026/2027. If you were admitted in an earlier session, this notice is not written for you.

Category 1: Faculty of Agriculture

All newly admitted students in the Faculty of Agriculture are exempted from paying tuition fees. The key point is that the exemption covers tuition only. Students in the faculty are still required to pay all applicable sundry charges. Budget for those charges, because they can be a substantial part of your first-session bill.

If you are an Agriculture student, do not assume that the exemption means your first payment will be small. Ask the Directorate of Admissions for an itemised list of the sundry charges that will still apply to you, so you know the real amount before you pay.

Category 2: French, History, Mathematics, Music and Statistics

Newly admitted students in five programmes receive a tuition fee exemption, and the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarships cover all applicable sundry charges. The five programmes named in the notice are French, History, Mathematics, Music and Statistics. Taken together, the exemption and the scholarship are designed to cover both tuition and sundry charges for students admitted into these programmes.

This is the broadest category in the notice for the programmes it names. It is still conditional on being newly admitted into one of those programmes, so confirm your course title against the official list before you rely on it. If you are admitted into a similar programme with a different name, ask the university to confirm whether it is included.

Category 3: International students

All international students are reported to be entitled to special financial grants under the notice. The announcement, as reported, does not state the grant amount or explain how payments are made. Do not assume a figure. Contact the university to ask for the grant amount, the eligibility conditions and the payment arrangements in writing.

How to confirm your eligibility

Work through these steps before you make any payment:

  1. Confirm that you are a newly admitted student for the 2026/2027 session. Continuing students are not covered by this notice.
  2. Check your course title against the category it falls under. Agriculture is a faculty-wide exemption. The five named programmes are listed above. International students are covered by a separate grant.
  3. Read the notice on the official AKSU website at https://aksu.edu.ng/ or check the official site for the current wording and any updates. Do not rely on a summary alone, including this one.
  4. Contact the Directorate of Admissions to confirm your eligibility. The telephone numbers published in the reports are 08023936376 and 08039333813. Call from a number you can keep, and write down the name of the officer you speak to and the date of the call.
  5. Ask for the sundry charges in writing, so you know exactly what you still have to pay.
  6. Keep every receipt and every confirmation email or letter from the university.

What the exemption does not replace

A tuition exemption does not remove every cost of university. Accommodation, books, transport, feeding and any sundry charges that still apply are your responsibility unless a notice says otherwise. For Agriculture students, the exemption applies only to tuition. For the five named programmes, the scholarship covers sundry charges, but you should still check the notice for anything it leaves out.

If the scheme does not cover you, do not treat that as the end of your funding options. Many students combine a part scholarship, a state or private bursary, or a small part-time income to cover the gap. Check the official sites of your state government and any scholarship body that applies to you.

Why first-session costs add up

Many new students plan only for the admission fee and the first tuition payment, then discover that the rest of the bill arrives in pieces. Sundry charges, departmental fees, student union dues, hostel deposits and medical charges can each appear as separate items. This is why the distinction between tuition and sundry charges in the AKSU notice matters so much. An exemption on one line does not reduce the others.

A practical approach is to write a simple budget before registration. List the tuition exemption or scholarship first, then list each sundry charge you have confirmed in writing, then add accommodation, books and transport. Compare the total against what your family can realistically pay. If there is a gap, raise it with the Directorate of Admissions early rather than after you have already committed to a course.

Common questions

Do continuing students benefit? The notice, as reported, is for newly admitted students for the 2026/2027 session. Continuing students should check with the Directorate of Admissions or the official notice for any other arrangements.

Is the exemption the same as a scholarship? No. The Agriculture exemption covers tuition only. The programme scheme combines a tuition exemption with a Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship that covers sundry charges. The international grant is a separate category.

Is there a deadline? The reports do not give a closing date for the exemptions. Check the official site for any deadline for accepting your admission or completing registration.

How do I know if the portal is open? The reports do not describe an application portal for these exemptions. Check the official site at https://aksu.edu.ng/ to see whether any application or registration step is open for the 2026/2027 session.

Scam awareness

Admission and scholarship seasons attract fraudsters. Be careful with anyone who contacts you on social media, messaging apps or phone and asks you to pay a fee to be placed on an exemption list, to secure a scholarship slot, or to speed up your admission. Official notices do not ask you to pay to be considered. Do not share your JAMB or admission login details with anyone. If you are unsure, call the Directorate of Admissions using the numbers above and check the official site before you act.
