Getting your academic transcript in Nigeria is one of those jobs that looks simple until you start. Whether you are applying for a master’s abroad, a scholarship, a professional body, or a job that wants proof of your grades, the request usually goes through a school office, an exam body, or a government portal, and each one works differently. This guide walks through the official routes and what to expect. Fees and timelines change, so treat every number here as a starting point and confirm on the official page before you pay.

Why you usually need a transcript
A transcript is the official record of the courses you took and the grades you earned. It is not the same as your certificate. The certificate says you graduated; the transcript shows what you studied, when, and how you performed. Most applications ask for it in one of these situations:
- Admission into a master’s or PhD programme outside Nigeria.
- Scholarship applications that require academic records.
- Professional licensing and membership bodies.
- Credential evaluation for migration or foreign employment.
Because the receiving institution often wants the document sent directly from the issuer, start early. A request that takes three weeks in good conditions can take much longer during exam periods or public holidays.
Step by step: getting your university transcript
- Find your school’s records or exams office, or its online transcript portal. Many federal universities now have one.
- Fill in the request form with your matric number and year of graduation.
- Choose the delivery type. Some schools separate an official copy sent to an institution from a student copy sent to you, and the two can be priced differently.
- Pay the official fee on the portal or at the bank the school names. Keep the receipt.
- Submit the application and note the reference number so you can track it.
- Follow up politely if the status does not move, and keep copies of everything.
The University of Ibadan is a useful example of how this works in practice. Its Records Unit states that transcripts are applied for through a Transcript Processing Portal linked from the university’s homepage, and that fees are paid through that portal. The unit lists separate charges for transcripts sent to foreign addresses, transcripts sent to Nigerian addresses, a student’s copy, and verification of an academic record. You can check the current figures at https://ui.edu.ng/content/records-unit.
Graduates of affiliated institutions and the UI Distance Learning Centre are handled differently, so read the notice on that page before applying if that describes you.
WAEC: attestation and certificate requests
WAEC results and certificates are not requested from your university. They come from the West African Examinations Council. WAEC runs an attestation service for results and a certificate request portal, and it also has an online verification page for employers and institutions that need to confirm a result.
- Attestation of results: https://www.waec.org/attestation-of-result/
- Certificate request: https://certrequest.waec.ng/Certificate-Request
- Online verification: https://waeconline.org.ng/verification/default.aspx
You will need your exam year and candidate number, and the institution or address the document should go to. The WAEC transcript fee is not published on the pages we checked for this guide, so look up the current charge on WAEC’s own portal before you pay anyone.
NECO: e-Verify and results
NECO records are handled through its own verification system. NECO’s results portal issues a token that covers up to five checks; after that, you move to the e-Verify service. Use the official addresses below:
- NECO results: https://results.neco.gov.ng/
- NECO e-Verify: https://everify.neco.gov.ng/
NECO fees were not confirmed on the pages we could reach while preparing this guide, so check the portal at the point of payment.
Foreign applications and the ESS portal
For some foreign applications, the transcript has to come through the Federal Ministry of Education’s ESS verification system at https://essverify.education.gov.ng/. In that system, institutions email transcripts directly to the requesting body. Applicants cannot send these themselves through the portal, and payments made to the system are not refundable, so confirm that your receiving institution actually needs this route before you pay.
What it costs: examples, not a national rate
There is no single national price for an academic transcript. Each school sets its own charges, and the figures below are examples from individual institutions, not a rule for all of Nigeria. Fees vary by school and change over time, so confirm on the school’s portal.
| Institution | Example charge | Processing time |
|---|---|---|
| Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) | N5,000 e-copy local, N15,000 hard copy local, $12 e-copy international, $120 hard copy international | 24 to 48 hours for e-copy, 5 to 7 days for hard copy |
| University of Ilorin (Unilorin) | N10,000 postgraduate transcript, N7,000 verification | Check the portal |
| University of Ibadan (UI) | N5,000 local address, N7,000 foreign address, N5,000 student’s copy, N5,000 verification | Check the portal |
| American University of Nigeria (AUN) | N25,000, shipping extra | 5 to 10 days |
Processing times
Times depend on the school, the destination, and whether the document is electronic or a hard copy. Electronic transcripts are usually quickest. Hard copies sent by courier take longer, and a transcript sent to an overseas address can take several more days in transit. Build in a buffer of at least a few weeks before any deadline, and more if your school is in a busy period.
If you are planning to study abroad, the transcript is only one part of the file. Many admissions offices also ask for a certified copy of your certificate, a credential evaluation, and proof of English language ability. Check the exact list on the receiving institution’s website early, because some ask for the transcript to be sent in a sealed envelope, while others accept a secure electronic copy. Our guide on the Canada study visa from Nigeria explains which documents the visa side usually asks for, so you can gather everything in one pass instead of requesting the same record twice.
When you request a transcript, keep a simple tracker with the school name, date paid, reference number, delivery method, and expected date. Write down the name of the officer you spoke to if you call the records office. This sounds like overkill until a record goes missing in transit, and a dated receipt with a reference number is what gets a problem solved quickly.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a transcript take? It depends on the school. Some electronic requests are processed within a day or two, while hard copies can take a week or more. Ask the records office for their current timeline.
Can I collect it myself? Some schools release a sealed copy to the student, but many send it directly to the receiving institution. The UI Records Unit, for example, accepts self, proxy, email, or courier collection depending on the request.
What is the difference between a transcript and a certificate? A certificate confirms that you finished a qualification. A transcript lists the courses and grades behind it.
Can I get an electronic transcript? Many universities now offer secure electronic delivery, which is often the fastest route for foreign applications. Check whether your school offers it.
Do I need a WAEC or NECO record as well? Often yes, for study abroad. Those are secondary school results and are requested from the exam body, not from your university.
Beware of “fast-track” agents
Some agents online and around campus offer to get your official transcript fast for a large fee, often by “going through a contact.” Do not pay them. A document obtained this way can be fake, and an institution that finds it can reject your application outright. Only pay through the school’s own portal, the exam body’s official site, or the government system your receiving institution names, and keep every receipt.
