If you build with AI and you’re Nigerian, this one is for you. The National AI Innovation Challenge is calling on developers to build real solutions on Nigeria’s own large language model, and the window is tight. Applications are open for a limited window, and the challenge has a firm closing date. Here’s what you need to know before you submit.
What the National AI Innovation Challenge is
The National AI Innovation Challenge is a federal programme run under the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy. Its goal is to deepen how Nigeria develops, adopts and scales its own sovereign AI. In plain terms, the government wants Nigerian developers building practical tools on home-grown AI rather than only consuming foreign models.
This is a build-only challenge. You don’t pitch an idea on paper; you submit a working solution that actually integrates with N-ATLAS. So the people who win are the ones who can ship something that runs.
Meet N-ATLAS, the model at the centre
N-ATLAS stands for Nigerian Atlas for Languages and AI at Scale. It’s Nigeria’s first open-source, multilingual large language model, fine-tuned from Llama-3 8B. What makes it special is local relevance.
- It supports Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo and Nigerian-accented English.
- It includes Automatic Speech Recognition, so you can build voice-driven applications.
- It’s open-source, which means you can build on it freely.
That language support is the real opening. Tools that understand how Nigerians actually speak have been missing for a long time, and N-ATLAS closes that gap.
What you can build
The challenge points Nigerian talent in three clear directions. You can build:
- Developer tools that make it easier for others to build on N-ATLAS.
- Voice-first applications that use the model’s speech recognition.
- Sector-specific AI solutions, for areas like health, agriculture, education or finance.
Pick the lane where you’re strongest. A focused, working solution beats a broad idea that only half runs.
Who can enter
This is a national challenge, so it’s for Nigerians. Whether you’re a solo developer, a student with coding chops or a small team, what matters is that you can produce a working artefact that plugs into N-ATLAS by the deadline.
If you’re still building your skills, it’s not too late to level up. Our roundup of free AI skills courses can help you sharpen the fundamentals, and programmes like the ALX Nigeria programme are solid routes into serious software and AI work.
Confirm the exact closing time
The challenge has an official closing date, as at the time of writing. One thing to watch: different notices around the challenge have shown different closing times for that day, so don’t assume you have until midnight. Check the exact cut-off time on the official portal and aim to submit well ahead of it. Last-minute uploads fail for the smallest reasons, from a weak connection to a file that won’t process.
Apply through the official channel only
Use the official programme page to apply and to confirm every detail, including eligibility and submission rules. You can find everything on the official National AI Innovation Challenge page. Dates and details here are correct as at the time of writing.
As with any government opportunity, nobody can sell you a spot. There’s no agent who can guarantee selection and no reason to pay a stranger to “register” you. Your work speaks for you here.
