The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is the federal agency that collects duties, guards the country’s borders and regulates the movement of goods in and out of Nigeria. Its ports, airports and border posts employ thousands of people in uniform and in administrative roles, which is why every recruitment exercise draws a huge number of applicants. Millions of young Nigerians look at a customs job as stable, government-backed work with a clear career path, and that demand is exactly what scammers feed on.
This guide explains what the official recruitment process looks like, what the requirements generally cover, how to apply when a real portal opens, and how to protect yourself. We have checked the official pages listed below on the date shown. Where a detail is not confirmed on an official page, we say so and point you to the official site.

Where to check for official NCS recruitment
Two official sites matter. The main Nigeria Customs Service website is customs.gov.ng, and the dedicated recruitment portal is recruitment.customs.gov.ng. Both loaded for this update. The recruitment portal carries a warning to beware of scammers and tells applicants to use only the official portal. When we checked, the portal did not show an open 2026 application call with dates. Check both pages again before you act, because the status can change at any time.
If a page or post claims that a new NCS application is open, it must be linked from one of these official sites. A screenshot, a WhatsApp message or a social media post is not proof.
Is there an active 2026 exercise right now?
As of this update, we did not find an open 2026 application call on the official NCS portal. Older recruitment exercises, including the 2024/2025 cycle, are a different matter. If you applied in an earlier exercise, the official portal may ask you to verify your details or deal with appointment steps. That is not the same as applying again. We will not state a new deadline here, because none is confirmed on an official page.
Typical requirements (confirm on the official site)
Customs recruitment usually groups vacancies into cadres, and each cadre has its own minimum qualification. The official portal has listed cadres such as Superintendent, Inspectorate, Customs Assistant, General Duty and Support Staff. The minimum education level differs by cadre and has included a university degree or HND, an ND or NCE, or an SSCE certificate. Do not assume the requirement from one exercise carries over to the next. Read the notice for the specific cadre you want when a real one is published.
Applicants are generally expected to be Nigerian citizens and to have a valid National Identification Number (NIN). Age limits are set in each notice, so check the age band on the official site for the cadre you are applying for. We have not confirmed the current age band, so please check it there.
Application is free
Applying for a Nigeria Customs Service recruitment exercise is free. The official recruitment portal states that no fees or payments are required. If anybody asks you to pay for an application, a form, a test slot, a shortlist, a “special verification” or a placement, that person is not part of the official process. Report it and walk away.
How to apply when a real portal opens
When the NCS announces a fresh exercise, follow these steps. Only the official portal is allowed, and you should type the address yourself rather than tapping a link from a message.
- Read the official notice in full, including the cadre, the qualification, the age band and the closing date. Save a copy or screenshot of the notice.
- Gather your documents before you start: your NIN, a valid email address you can access, your certificates and a clear passport photograph, in the sizes and formats the portal asks for.
- Go to recruitment.customs.gov.ng and create your account with your own email. Do not let anyone else create or manage it for you.
- Fill in the form with accurate personal, educational and contact details. Mistakes in your name or your NIN can cost you a shortlisting.
- Upload your documents exactly as the portal asks, then review the full form before you submit.
- Submit the form and save the confirmation page or reference number. Keep your login details private.
- Check your email and the official portal regularly for updates. The NCS communicates through official channels, not through agents.
What happens after you apply
Customs recruitment exercises have generally moved through screening stages. Applicants are first checked against the eligibility criteria, then many are invited to a computer-based test (CBT). Shortlisted candidates may face further steps such as document verification, interviews, physical or medical examinations, and a background check before final lists are released. The order and the details change between exercises, so treat the stages above as a general pattern and follow the notice for the exercise you actually entered.
Being shortlisted does not guarantee a job. Keep your original certificates ready, and do not pay anyone at any stage. Real stages do not require you to buy a slot.

Scam warning: fake customs jobs
Customs recruitment is one of the most copied job announcements in Nigeria. Scammers use the NCS logo, fake portals and WhatsApp groups. They ask for money for “forms”, “shortlists”, “test slots”, “final list placement” or “appointment letters”, and they ask for your NIN, email login or portal code. The rule is simple. The official NCS applicant portal is recruitment.customs.gov.ng, and any link that does not come from customs.gov.ng or recruitment.customs.gov.ng is fake until proven otherwise. Never send money, never share your portal code, and never let anyone log in to your account for you.
