Your National Identification Number has quietly become the key to almost everything in Nigeria, from JAMB registration, your international passport, SIM cards, bank accounts and most job applications all ask for it. So whether you need to enrol for the first time or you have simply forgotten your number, here is how to sort it out.
Getting a NIN for the first time
Enrolment is handled by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). You visit a NIMC enrolment centre or an approved agent with a supporting document such as your birth certificate, and you provide your biometrics, meaning your fingerprints and a photograph. First-time enrolment is free. After capture, you are given a slip, and your NIN is issued once your record is processed.
Retrieving a NIN you have lost
- USSD: on the phone number linked to your record, dial *346# and follow the prompts (a small network charge may apply).
- NIMC app: download the official NIMC mobile ID app, verify yourself, and view or generate your NIN.
- In person: visit any NIMC office with a valid ID and ask them to retrieve it.
Once you have your number, store it safely. You rarely need the physical card, since a verified NIN slip or the digital version is accepted for most purposes.
Stay alert to scams
NIMC does not use random WhatsApp numbers or ask you to pay large “activation” fees. Avoid agents who demand heavy charges to “link” or “upgrade” your NIN, and never share the one-time codes sent to your phone.
Fixing wrong details on your NIN
Mistakes on a NIN record, a misspelt name, a wrong date of birth, or an outdated phone number, cause real problems later, so fix them properly through NIMC rather than ignoring them. Corrections and modifications are handled at a NIMC office or through the official channels, and some changes carry an official fee and may require supporting documents such as an affidavit or your birth certificate. Do not use a random agent who promises a quick “upgrade”, because unofficial changes can corrupt your record. The sooner you correct an error, the less trouble it causes when you apply for a passport, a bank account, or a job that verifies your identity.
Why your NIN must match everywhere
Your NIN is now the thread that ties your identity together, so the details on it should match your other records exactly. Make sure the name order, spelling, and date of birth on your NIN agree with your SIM registration, your bank account, your O’level and degree certificates, and your JAMB profile. A mismatch between any of these can freeze a transaction, delay a passport, or flag a job application at verification. If you spot a difference, decide which record is correct and align the others to it, starting the corrections early rather than when a deadline is already pressing.
Frequently asked questions
Is NIN enrolment free? Yes, first-time enrolment is free. Modifications or slip reprints may carry an official charge.
How do I check my NIN on my phone? Dial *346# on your registered line, or use the official NIMC app.
Do I need the physical card? Usually not. A verified NIN or slip is accepted for most registrations and applications.
Linking your NIN
Having a NIN is only half the job; you also need it correctly linked to your SIM card and, increasingly, your bank records. If your lines are not linked, you may face restrictions, so use the linking code your network provides or visit its outlet with your NIN slip. Keep the name on your NIN, SIM and bank account identical to avoid verification problems later.
Can I use another person’s phone to retrieve my NIN? The USSD method works on the line tied to your record; from another phone, use the NIMC app or visit an office with a valid ID.
Enrol and verify only through the official NIMC website. Your NIN is required for things like your Nigerian passport application, and knowing how it is used helps you dodge recruitment scams that misuse personal data.
